Geomagnetic Disturbance Prevention
The scope of this R&D project was to mitigate damage caused by solar storms and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) by preventing geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in power systems across Ontario. The goals were to identify vulnerabilities, install magnetometers, and create a real-time simulator to compare data with Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Ottawa Magnetic Observatory.
Responsibilities unique to this project:
Assisted an NRCan consultant with Geomagnetic Force surveys across Ontario and developed contour plots of geomagnetic relief.
Facilitated the design of a solar-powered SCADA monitoring cabinet and front-end processor.
Ensured spatial validity and reliability of the magnetometer data through consultation with several subject-matter experts.
Implemented updated corporate router standards.
